What's in my cup?
Does anyone remember the scene in Coyote Ugly when the guy at the bar orders water? The bartender asks the crowd “do we serve water in this bar?” and the crowd starts chanting back “hell no H2O, hell no H2O”. The bartender then hoses the guy with a shit ton of water.. remember this? Yea, I would be that guy at the bar getting hosed.. and here is why.
W A T E R is my favorite. Really, truly, honestly, I love water. Years ago I cut out soda, the sugar makes me feel like I am spinning. Water was all I ever drank during the day. But then I learned that I wasn’t getting enough. This was a strange concept to me because again, all I drank was water. Did you know that in order for your body to operate at an optimal level you need to consume HALF your body weight in ounces of water?! Yep. Take your body weight, divide it in half (let’s say you way 120lbs, divided by 2 = 60. You need to drink 60 ounces of water every.single.day my friend) and drink that much water. No, coffee doesn’t count just because you add in water to make it. I am talking pure, filtered water. Trust me, do this daily and you will feel so much better. Yes, you will pee A LOT. But you will also experience more energy, clearer skin and a better mood. This will help your digestion and probably help curb your appetite between meals because if you are eating properly, you shouldn’t be hungry, you’re either just bored or dehydrated.
While we are on the subject of “what’s in my cup”, let’s briefly talk alcohol. I have always been a social drinker, enjoyed a good fresh cocktail like a cucumber mule with a spicy rim. And wine, my goodness, I would like for my diet to consist of wine and popcorn. But I recently participated in a 90 day challenge and had to give up 1 thing I knew I shouldn’t be eating. I don’t mean to toot my own horn but I have pretty good eating habits. So I chose to give up alcohol (insert brakes screeching, glasses breaking, people gasping). Oh and did I mention that this was during holiday season? Had I lost my mind, probably. But like I said, it was a CHALLENGE, so I knew I could kick ass at it if I wanted to. And I am here to report that I did it freaking well. I can count the times I had a drink on one hand including during a toast at a best friends wedding, during a dinner where I was meeting new people (because I don’t care what anyone says, making friends as an adult sucks). My 90 day challenge was up right before NYE which was perfect, right? Well that weekend I tried drinking, still in moderation because if I wasn’t a light weight before, I am now. And here’s the thing, it’s not that exciting. It left me feeling bloated and like I ate a bunch of candy. My energy was low and honestly, it left me wondering if it’s even worth it. Let me mention a few of the perks I noticed during my challenge: better skin, more energy, weight loss and an overall better mood.
I’ll let you be the judge of your own intake, but try to be more intentional with what you consume. What is fueling your body, mind and soul?
